Ayodhya, the sacred city on the banks of the Sarayu River, is not just a travel destination—it’s a deeply spiritual experience. I recently visited Ayodhya from Delhi with my family, including a kid and senior citizens. To keep the journey comfortable and relaxed, we planned a 2-day trip, though younger travelers can easily complete Ayodhya sightseeing in 1 day.
We chose to travel by train, which is one of the most convenient options for families.
Multiple trains are available from Delhi to Ayodhya Junction / Ayodhya Dham Junction
Overnight or early morning trains work best
The journey takes approximately 10–12 hours
Train travel is comfortable, budget-friendly, and especially suitable when traveling with elders and children.
We stayed at Nilayam Inn Hotel, which turned out to be a perfect choice for our family.
The hotel provides a kitchen facility, which was very helpful for preparing the child’s milk and our morning/evening tea
For all main meals, we ordered food via Swiggy and also ate at nearby restaurants
The stay was peaceful, clean, and family-friendly
I booked the hotel directly via a phone call instead of online platforms and got a very good deal. Calling hotels directly in Ayodhya can often help you save money.
Getting around Ayodhya is simple and budget-friendly.
E-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are easily available
Short rides usually cost around ₹10–₹20 per person
Local buses also connect all major temples and ghats
This made traveling with elders and a child very convenient.
Ayodhya is a compact city, and most attractions are located close to each other.
Places we covered:
Shri Ram Janmabhoomi – The most important spiritual site in Ayodhya
Hanuman Garhi – A revered temple with panoramic views of the city
Saryu Ghat – Ideal for evening aarti and peaceful moments by the river
Nageshwarnath Temple – One of the oldest and historically significant temples
On the second day, we visited Guptar Ghat, which holds immense spiritual significance. This is believed to be the place where Lord Ram took Jal Samadhi.
The ghat is calm and less crowded compared to central Ayodhya
You can skip Guptar Ghat if you are short on time
However, for devotees, it marks the final spiritual point of Lord Ram’s journey and is worth visiting
Since Guptar Ghat is slightly away from the main city, we covered it comfortably on Day 2.
Ayodhya offers mostly simple vegetarian food, in line with its spiritual culture.
Local bhojanalayas near temples
Small restaurants serving North Indian vegetarian meals
Street food options like kachori, poori-sabzi, jalebi, and lassi
Swiggy is available, which made ordering food easy when we wanted to eat at the hotel
1 Day Trip: Suitable for young travelers who prefer a fast-paced visit
2 Day Trip: Recommended for families with kids and senior citizens
We chose the 2-day option to explore Ayodhya peacefully without rushing.
Our trip to Ayodhya was calm, spiritual, and well-planned. Traveling by train, staying at Nilayam Inn Hotel, and using affordable local transport made the journey comfortable for the entire family.
Ayodhya is welcoming, well-connected, and easy to explore—perfect for both short spiritual visits and relaxed family trips.
